Georgia Churches

  • The Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula, GA installed nearly 1,000 high efficiency lighting, saving $1,400 per month after loan payments.
  • Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church acknowledges falling far short of what it can do to promote eco-justice and care for God's creation. The church has regular environmental speakers for their Wednesday Night Suppers, cleans up nearby Peavine Creek each year for Good Neighbor Day, and hosts a Green Sunday, "Festival of God's Creation." The Sundays schools and children's summer Sunday School curriculum have eco-justice and environmental lessons woven within them, and in 2008 the summer Sunday School featured a Noah's Ark made out of recycled bottles. The Youth Group's outreach "Drive-By Raking" in the Fall has given one compact fluorescent light bulb to each neighbor after they rake the leaves in their yard. With help from Georgia Interfaith Power and Light, the church is improving energy efficiency to strive toward zero carbon emissions, following an energy audit that already rated the buildings as above average for energy efficiency in the region, mainly because of double-pane windows and energy efficient lighting installed previously. Having implemented a recycling plan in partnership with Emory University, the church is now working on obtaining food from more local organic sources and finding a site to compost food waste and compostable food containers for members that take to-go dinners. The church goal is to consider the full life cycle of items purchased and used, and work toward low impact items that can be used, recycled, and used again without losing any material quality, as described in the book Cradle to Cradle. The church is a long way from achieving its goals, but struggling to just the same. The library has added environmental resources to help members at home, including environmental resource books, Kill-A-Watts, and movies like "Renewal" and "Kilowatt Ours."
