2012: The Year of Ethics of Energy
As people of faith, how do we use energy wisely, sustainably, and in keeping with our Biblical teachings? It’s a challenging question with no easy answer, and it has come up a lot in the news, in our houses of worship, and in our faith and eco-justice circles a lot lately.
We thought the best way to tackle this and other questions would be to devote this year (2012) to exploring the Ethics of Energy. Please let us know if you have questions, stories, or specific issues you would like us to address over the course of the year.
This year we have:
- Dedicated our Earth Day Sunday Resource to energy. (Click here to download your copy of “The Ethics of Energy” Christian education and liturgy resource for free. )
- Featured stories of congregations and communities undertaking creative responses to energy use and in turn helping us understand and answer some of these hard questions. Click here to send us your stories. Click here to see photos and quotes from our March 2012 Ethics of Energy Story Tour.
- Planned six webinars exploring different energy challenges and opportunities being addressed around the country.
1. Smart Grid: Using Emerging Technologies for Energy Stewardship. (February 2012) This webinar featured speakers from Silver Spring Networks, Global Green, and the NCC Poverty Initiative. Download the PowerPoint here.
April 12, 2012: Hydraulic Fracturing (also known as " Fracking"). This webinar provided a detailed explanation of hydraulic fracturing, featured an update from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on current studies underway, and provided a critical faithful reflection on its benefits and drawbacks.
June 5, 2012 3:00pm ET. Clean Vehicles and You. Click here to register for this webinar with the Union of Concerned Scientists about what faith considerations we should make when we consider our transportation choices. In particular, this webinar will focus on electric cars.
