NCC Statement on FDA's BPA Announcement

The National Council of Churches applauds the announcement made October 11th by the Food and Drug Administration of their intention to propose a ruling to ban bisphenol-a (BPA) in baby bottles and sippy cups. The science linking BPA to a number of health concerns such as cancer, early puberty, and reproductive challenges is clear and overwhelming- and so is the moral argument to protect children’s health and future generations. This announcement is a victory for children and future generations across the nation. We hope that this is only a first step in removing BPA from products children and pregnant women may come in contact with, such as food cans, food containers and receipt paper.

As people of faith, we strive to live out Christ’s witness by caring for the most vulnerable members of our society. Over the last four years, people of faith across the country worked tirelessly for state BPA bans and federal action that put children's health before profits. We hope the FDA will act swiftly to propose this ruling and take further steps to protect children and pregnant women from BPA.
